Wassail

It’s a popular drink during holiday feasts that surely fills the air with the spirit of Christmas. Wassail is a punch made of sweetened ale or wine heated with spices and roasted apples, and served in a large bowl. Although popular in many countries, this beverage is common especially among the Germanics. Wassail is a contraction of a Middle English phrase which means “be healthy.” Thus, a wassail is a toast to someone’s health.
Modern versions of the “wassail” are usually made with apple cider, and pineapple and orange juice. But traditional wassail was very different. It was more likely to use mulled beer. Other ingredients would be added to the bowl: sugar, ale, ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The bowl would then be heated and topped with toast slices. The use of cinnamon sticks is perhaps the only similarity between modern and historical wassail.
