When used in the kitchen, bay leaves are not usually ingested. They are just added to foods to add flavor then are removed to avoid mistakenly being eaten. They are available dried or fresh. Adding bay leaves gives great flavor especially if you are cutting down on salt.
They have healing abilities properties too. The leaves and the fruits of the Bay Laurel are used to aid digestion and is slightly tonic and purifying. It is also used for nervousness, paralysis and as an aid to urination after childbirth. It is also used as a soothing balm for itches, sprains, bruises, skin irritations and rheumatic pain. The leaf and berry can be boiled and used as a poultice with honey for chest colds.
