As an herbal medicine it is believed to be one of the most over-looked herbal wonders. Licorice root has an impressive list of well documented uses which include medication of asthma, athlete’s food, baldness, body odor, bursitis, chronic fatigue, depression and many others. It is taken in candy form for colds and cough. It is also popular for healing ulcers of the digestive tract. Recent studies indicate that licorice root contains substances that kill certain bacteria and fungus.
For all of its benefits, licorice root also has undesirable side effects. One problem is that it can raise blood pressure. For those suffering from hypertension, heart disease or diseases of the liver and kidney, taking just a licorice candy can be detrimental. Licorice may also increase the effects and unwanted side effects of steroid medications. Pregnant and nursing women should stay away from licorice because it is unknown what kind of side effects it can have on the baby.
